In a decisive move to improve healthcare delivery across Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Eric Akpan, Member representing Nsit Ibom State Constituency, has sponsored a motion urging the government to develop a Comprehensive Chronic Disease Management Framework under the Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Scheme (AKSHIS).
The motion addresses the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension, and sickle cell disease, conditions that continue to impact lives and strain household finances.
“We must act decisively to protect our people from the silent epidemic of chronic diseases,” Hon. Akpan stated. “This framework will improve health outcomes, reduce long-term costs, and enhance productivity for families and communities.”
Key recommendations include:
Developing a chronic disease management framework tailored to Akwa Ibom’s needs, Integrating it into AKSHIS for subsidized treatment and equitable access.
Leveraging Primary Health Care Centers and accredited hospitals
Promoting public awareness and preventive education.
The motion also calls for a state-wide health assessment to guide targeted interventions and ensure sustainable financing.
“This is about building a resilient and inclusive health system, one that prioritizes the most vulnerable and ensures no one is left behind,” Hon. Akpan concluded.
The motion has received positive feedback from stakeholders and constituents, marking a pivotal step toward smarter, fairer healthcare in Akwa Ibom.
